Ingrid Motteux, ‘John Platter South African Wine Guide 2008′
“Green apple aromas, broad, interesting flavours & earthy minerality.”

Jean-Pierre Rossouw, ‘Cape Times’
“great table wine, easy drinking but not simple and lovely for being dry without residual sweetness.”

Allan Mullins, ‘Taste’
Solms-Astor range: “The three ‘musical wines’ are like a breath of fresh air in our often-staid South African wine industry…. their joyous spirit and reasonable prices are guaranteed to get you dancing.”
“Versatile and festive … it is as uplifting as rain on dusty, hot earth and the nose of freshly squeezed lemon bounces along to a lime-apricot finish. An informal wine for Cape foods or informal celebrations.”

Nelson Redux, ‘Live Out Loud’
“…a tantalising combination of crisp, rich and fragrant.”

South African Garden and Home
“Made in a reductive style to capture the upfront crisp fruit profile, it is a deliciously fresh option, ideal for light lunches. Bursting with herbaceous flavours on both the nose and palate.”

Carmen Kirsten, ‘Woman & Home’
“With the foot-tapping name of Vastrap, it goes without saying that this is an easy-drinking, fresh, social white Cape blend – perfect for having with friends at a light lunch. Fruity and pairs well with fish or pizza.”

Reader’s Recommendation, ‘Sunday Times Travel & Food’
“The tropical fruit flavours are bracing and fresh and it goes down well with calamari stew. The screw cap is also a convenient feature.”

Ludwig Maske, ‘The Franschhoek Tatler’
“Fresh and fruity yet dry white. Who would have thought that a wine mixed from chenin blanc, clairette blanche and semillon could be an alternative to sauvignon blanc? This works and it’s far more interesting than most of the sauvignon’s out there.”

Diana Procter, ‘The Witness’
“Fresh and fruity, perfect for summer drinking on a patio or at a picnic.”

Tim James, ‘Noseweek’
“good value … highly recommended”

Sonja Burger, ‘Farmer’s Weekly’
“easy-drinking, approachable, bold and fruity”

Myrna Robins, ‘Saturday Weekend Argus The Good Weekend’
“attracting attention … One of a trio of fun labels, it’s meant to be enjoyed in similar spirit to that traditional Cape dance accompanied by concertina, banjo and blik-kitaar.”

Neil Pendock, ‘Financial Mail’
“authentic gem…..handcrafted for drinkability rather than wine show glory…real party wine.

Ingrid Motteux, ‘Grape’
“Pale gold, with honeyed, golden-delicious aromas and flavours, the wine offers good breadth, rich texture and a structured, focused finish…..an easy, southern-French style.”

Solms-Astor - Vastrap

Vastrap is a white wine blend of Chenin blanc, Clairette blanche and Semillon. These are classic Cape cultivars, some of them now out of fashion. Chenin blanc was traditionally known as ‘Steen’ (pip) and Semillon as ‘Groen druif’ (green grape).

Groen druif has been grown in the Franschhoek valley without interruption for 320 years, and was for more than two centuries the only white varietal grown on Delta estate. The large-berried Clairette blanche component of this blend is desiccated on the vine, according to an ancient Greek practice, to intensify the flavour. In all other respects, Vastrap is made in a reductive style. The result is a delicate, fruity, easy-drinking fruity style wine (under screwcap).

Vastrap ['trample'] music unites Khoesan trance-dance with Dutch folk music. Played on anything: concertinas, home-made violins, banjos and ‘blik-kitaars’. The traditional excuse for a Vastrap party was the trampling of a newly laid cow-dung floor, but the ancestors are said to have preferred the open air.
