The estate offers nine innovative wines in two ranges, Solms-Delta and Solms-Astor, the former with varying quantities of desiccated (vine clamped and dried) grapes to create wines with different intensities and distinctive styles. In keeping with the estate’s rich heritage, all the wines have names which commemorate historical links.
The Solms-Delta wines: There are six wines in this range, consisting almost entirely of Rhône varietals. Two wines in this range, Africana and Koloni, are made entirely from desiccated grapes. These are intense, concentrated wines. The latest addition to this label (launched Thursday 8 July 2010) is Solms-Delta GEMOEDSRUS 2009 - a highly innovative elaboration on the theme of European ‘port’ wine. It is barrel-matured, desiccated Shiraz, fortified with husk spirit (grappa) made from the same desiccated bunches. The result is a dangerously delicious wine.
The Solms-Astor range: Consists mainly of unusual Cape blends. Inspired by the traditional folk music of the rural Cape, these wines reflect co-owner Richard Astor’s love of this music and his dislike of pomposity.
Wine Tasting at the estate
The Museum van de Caab at the Solms-Delta wine estate is open seven days a week, free of charge, from 9:00am to 6:00pm. Wine-tasting takes place in the museum or under the oaks outside. The museum, which chronicles the social history of the 325-year old estate, is housed in the original wine cellar dating back to 1740.
We welcome you to enjoy a tasting of Solms-Delta and Solms-Astor wines at the estate, and to learn about the way we make our wines by taking one of our Farm Tours. Our wines are available from various stockists and restaurants globally - click here for Wine Sales info on this site.
