The weather was chilly and overcast, and a light drizzle started the day, but that did not deter more than 900 runners and walkers from turning up for the annual Delta Draf held at Solms-Delta on Saturday.

The Music van de Caab Heritage Project on Solms-Delta has recorded a brand new showcase album, titled “Bamboesbos”, which was released at the Franschhoek Oesfees on March 24, 2012. It is the second CD to be released by the Delta Trust, which funds the Music van de Caab Project. The first album, ‘Hiervandaan’ was released last year, and was nominated for a SAMA award.

This year’s album is titled after the bamboo copses found on so many of the lush estates of the Cape Winelands. It honours the musical heritage of the descendants of the slaves of the colony of old, while thanking the ancestors for bringing the bamboo over from Batavia. The album is co-produced by project manager Adriaan Brand (himself a three-times SAMA winner) and project tutor/songwriter Nick Turner, who recently returned from a fruitful artistic stint in New York.

 Five thousand Cape music enthusiasts joined top local artists including David Kramer, Chris Chameleon, Emo Adams, Theuns Jordaan and a host of home-grown musical talent at this year’s fifth annual Franschhoek Oesfees, which took place in association with the ATKV (Afrikaanse Taal en Kultuurvereniging), at the Solms-Delta wine estate on Saturday 24 March.

The Solms-Delta and Die Burger Saturday Summer Concert Series, a season of outdoor live concerts set in the beautiful Franschhoek Winelands kicked off on Sat 12 January with music legend Pieter van der Westhuizen and local Delta musos – includes Delta 5: Springbok Nudies Adriaan Brand and Sons of Trout Nick Turner, the Soetstemme voices and Klein Handjies.

We round off a very busy year with some festive fun and a braai buffet; our Summer Concert suppers kick-off on 14 Jan; the Oesfees date is set for 24 March and we confirm sizzling line-up; Chef Shaun shares some festive fare recipe winners and we choose our favorite Cape Jazz Shiraz Cocktail recipe. We also share our recent blogs and wrap up with a report from the very special Anna Foundation.  We are open seven days a week from 9am to 5pm and close only on Christmas day and News Years day.

The awards ceremony for the 2012 Best of Wine Tourism was held at the picturesque La Motte Wine Estate today.  All the category winners collected on the lawns at the Historical Cellar for welcoming drinks and were entertained by our spirited Soetstemme choir.  I noticed one of the guests unreservedly joining the choir for one of their songs, and wondered why I had not thought of that!
