DYK? Why reds cost more than whites?
Did You Know? (DYK?) Red wines are usually more expensive because they are quite tannic and astringent, and have to be matured in barrels to soften the final product. Our barrels are produced in France, and have to be imported. After three to four years of use, all the subtle oak flavours have been extracted from the barrel and it can then only serve as a vessel, and is no longer of any use for the maturation of wine. As good red wines need to be matured for a number of years, new barrels have to be imported regularly. This adds considerably to the cost of the wine. White wines are usually fermented in stainless steel tanks, which can be used repeatedly.
New Assistant Winemaker: Maria Botha
The newest addition to the successful wine-making team at Solms-Delta is a Stellenbosch graduate. Not only does she have a degree from that prestigious institution, she has gained experience working in cellars and vineyards in France, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, England and the United States. Plus a few vineyards in South Africa like Thelema, Vilafonte and Beaumont wines. Yes! Enterprising and adventurous are certainly two qualities that characterize Maria Botha.
