July 15th, 2010

On February 11 we reported that a small herd of fat-tailed sheep had arrived at Solms-Delta. On Sunday afternoon the herd was augmented by two. By twins, to be exact. Francois, the farm manager, Freddie the water man and Willie the ‘wagter‘ took turns checking in on the little family throughout that night. Although the sheep are quite wild and accustomed to the icy temperatures of Ceres, the eldest twin was exhausted by her first night out and looked alarmingly limp the next morning. So her three fathers spent the morning constructing an afdak for them in a separate field. The separation became necessary because the other ewes started shoving and butting the mother and her lambs. According to Stuurman, a farm worker who comes from the Karoo where people know about these things, the ewes were confused by the event and possibly jealous. It appears that none has been bred before. Francois and Hein, the veld expert, think there might be two other fatties about to loose weight suddenly, and one quite soon. After a night under the afdak with her mother and brother Coffee, Cappucino was happily skipping about when Francois checked up on her on Monday morning.
